This is Leon Malmed’s true story of his and his sister Rachel’s escape from the Holocaust in Occupied France. When their father and mother were arrested in 1942, their courageous and heroic French neighbors volunteered to watch their children until they returned. Leon’s parents were taken first to Drancy, then to Auschwitz-Birkenau, and they never returned. Meanwhile their downstairs neighbors, Henri and Suzanne Ribouleau, gave the children a home and family and sheltered them through subsequent roundups, threats, air raids, and the war’s privations. The courage, sympathy, and dedication of the Ribouleaus and others stand in strong contrast to the collaborations and moral weakness of many of the French authorities. Leon and Rachel each came to America after the war, but always kept their strongest ties to “Papa Henri and Maman Suzanne,” who were honored as “Righteous Among the Nations” by Yad Vashem in 1977. Leon bares his soul in this narrative of love and courage, set against a backdrop of tragedy, fear, injustice, prejudice, and the greatest moral outrage of the modern era. It is a story of goodness triumphing once more over evil.

We survived … At last I speak eBook Leon Malmed

I first met Leon Malmed when doing an internet search under the name Malmed. Malmed is my name too and I expected no new news. A few generations of looking for Malmed the way we spell it had produced no results outside of my immediate relatives.
Much to my surprise this author showed up. Leon Malmed was also my grandfathers name. I sent him a postcard and months later a phone call was returned, the voice of a man with a French accent, "we could be cousins" he blurted out and proceeded to tell me his story, the story he tells in the book that he eventually wrote in French and is now translated to English. We survived ... At last I speak.
A first person report of a four year old boy and his sister as the horrors of the Holocaust explode their life. The themes that weave through the report of the lifelong emptiness of parents and family snatched away, the incredible generosity, sacrifice and bravery of those that were by chance neighbors who stepped forward to save the two Jewish children and to deliver them from the evil that was engulfing their known world. The post Holocaust metamorphosis of the author and a real life testimony for the "land of opportunity", America.
There is not much spoken about France and the responsibility shared with the Germans as Jewish People were herded into holding areas and transferred to their death. Leon Malmed says it.
Keep the message alive pass this story on.
Perhaps a third Seder would be appropriate and a fifth question.
"why on this night do we ask: "what happened to the parents of Leon Malmed?"

The profit on his book goes to the organization that helps the Holocaust Survivors in need.

We survived … At last I speak eBook Leon Malmed Reviews

Great story. Very well written account of the author's perspective, as a Jewish child that narrowly escapes capture by the Nazi's in France, while his parents and many other relatives are sent to the extermination camps. This generation with first-hand knowledge is disappearing, as we are 70 years from the liberation of Europe, and such personal accounts are rare. As the expanse of time brings us further away from the events of the Holocaust, it is important to be reminded of the atrocities that were committed, and how deeply they affected society at that time. This story lends a rather unique perspective to the terror of the Holocaust.
This book should be read by everyone, yet would have even more impact with some critical, ruthless editing.
The author's emotional reactions to his memories are more than understandable, yet become repetitious and muddy the telling of his story. The unfolding of the facts are important, too. Maybe his moral outrage would best be contained, for example, in the first and last chapters. A shorter book could be just as powerful.
A moving and inspiring story of courage, love, suffering and redemption. Offers surprising insights on France during the Nazi occupation. Gives new meaning to the Jewish phrase, "if you save one person, you save the world." Highly recommend.
I am so grateful to Leon Malmed for his account of a struggle from childhood to forgiveness by a Holocaust survivor. I was unable to put down the book once I started reading it. I read it in less than a day and forgot to move, and when I tried to move, I had very strong cramps! Thank you for sharing this writing. It was especially haunting as I was reading it just blocks from Hitler's bunker, in the safety of my hotel at Potsdamer Platz, and also just a few blocks from the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin. Our father survived the Holocaust also but has not been able to process it and create such a positive life after the childhood trials. He remains haunted by his sufferings, instead. Thank you, Leon Malmed, for offering us hope that maybe our father can reach the healing point where you are now.
I was fortunate enough to have met Leon Malmed and his wife during a Sabbath meal and he shared that he had written a book. I decided to purchase the audio book and was captivated by his story of survival. His telling of his story draws out anger, sadness, admiration, laughter, and endearment. This is a must hear, told by Leon Malmed himself. Brings home the horrors of the holocaust in a personal but hearable way.
This book was well written. Definitely recommend reading. Gives an insight into the horrible crimes committed against innocent people that I never realized. As an American, I take for granted my freedoms. So glad Mr Malmed survived this terrible time of our history and shared his story. Very inspirational.
I have always had a very large interest in the holocaust, and the acts that people took to be able to avoid the trains. This whole concept of "hiding in plain sight" is nothing short of brilliant. Normally when the jackboots head your way, it's over. These young kids and their co conspirators were able to outsmart the SS, and live to tell about it. It's similar to the Ann Frank situation, and no one betrayed them. The book is a must read for people who are looking for inspiration .
